When Your Home Feels Like Part of Who You Are

When we talk about property, it’s easy to focus on numbers, listings, or market trends. But if you have ever thought about selling your home, you know it’s rarely just a financial decision. For most of us, our homes are a living memory book; a reflection of our story, our family, and sometimes even our sense of self.

What We Found Out About Emotional Attachments

Recently, we invited people to take our quiz. We wanted to understand just how deeply these emotional ties run, and the results were more revealing than we expected.

A substantial 37% of those who responded shared that they feel very connected to their homes. For these people, the idea of moving is not just about logistics; it feels like leaving a piece of themselves behind. Whether it’s the marks on the door frame where the kids grew up, the favourite sunny spot in the backyard, or the kitchen that hosted countless family dinners, it’s clear that a home can become part of our identity.

When a House Feels Like Part of Who You Are

Digging even deeper, 17% told us that their home is a defining part of who they are, and they don’t feel ready to move. When your living space becomes an extension of yourself, the idea of leaving it behind can feel confronting, even overwhelming. These are the moments when a property is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a safe place, a comfort zone, a daily reminder of achievements and challenges.

Embracing Change, Or Working Through It

But as with any chapter, some are ready to see what’s next. Around 23% of respondents said their mindset is changing. They are starting to look forward to a new phase, and perhaps even a new space to make their own memories. And then there’s a practical middle ground: 20% know they have an attachment to their home, but they are actively working through these feelings so they can move forward when the time is right.

Letting Go Isn’t Always Easy

What surprised us most was just how rare it is to feel completely detached. Only 3% said they feel ready to close the book on this chapter with no reservations at all. That speaks volumes about how universal this emotional connection is, and why moving house can be one of life’s most complicated decisions.

Why Emotions Matter in Property Decisions

Why does all this matter? Because at MyPlace, we know that property decisions are never just about contracts and keys. Whether you are selling, buying, or managing a property, recognising your emotional connection is just as important as understanding the market. If you’re struggling with the idea of moving, you are certainly not alone.

Many of our clients describe the decision to sell as a series of “maybe” and “not yet” moments. It’s rarely as simple as yes or no. Sometimes it takes time, sometimes it needs the right nudge, and sometimes it just helps to have someone who understands both the process and the feelings involved.

How Clarity Leads to Confidence

We have seen firsthand that when people acknowledge their connection to their home, they feel more confident and clear in their choices. Sometimes, talking it out can shine a light on what’s really holding you back, or what you’re genuinely excited about in your next home.

Find Your Readiness

If you’re starting to think about your next move, or just want to understand your own readiness a little better, we invite you to take our short quiz. It’s designed to help you gain that much needed clarity before you take your next step.
