The Way We Live Is Changing

Creating a home is a process. There is nothing static about it. Our homes constantly evolve as we refine our tastes, grow our families and express ourselves through our environment. Our homes are as nuanced as we are. They tell our story. We grow together.

One of the beautiful things to emerge from Covid was spending more time in our homes and with our family. We bunkered down and allowed our homes to do exactly what they were designed for – to nurture and protect us. Our basic needs for safety and security were met for those of us lucky enough to live in a nurturing and protective environment.

Of course finding new ways to “be” and “do” in our environments unearthed new requirements from our spaces such as the rise of the home office, classroom and play spaces! We reconfigured and repurposed these spaces, some of us got really creative and some of us just had to suck it up and make do with what we had. These lived experiences will have lasting affects on how we design our living spaces into the future.

Shifting Spaces

Our homes are a container for all that is precious to us; our memories, our joys, our hopes and dreams. We wake up, grow up, clean up and show up under its nurturing spell. Each room provides sustenance through purpose; the bedroom our place to rest and recover awakening rejuvinated and ready for new possibilities; the kitchen to express creativity and fuel our bodies; and shared living spaces to enjoy relationships with others.

Deepening our connection to our homes and living out our values makes for a richer experience. It was an interesting journey for me and my family as we lingered a little longer in our rooms and spaces enjoying each others company. A renewal of sorts. A re-establishing, a new order if you like. The joy and sadness of this time is yet another story that our home will tell. Whether you are renting (as we are) or you have lived in your home your entire life this environment has shaped you as much as you have shaped it.

Celebrate Your Space

Let’s celebrate our homes whether they be compact and bijoux or grand family affaires. Find something you love about it. Create routines that nurture you. Allow it to reflect who you are and don’t be afraid to put your mark on your own little piece of this planet.

Often one of the most difficult things to come to terms with when you are considering whether to put your home on the market is to say a final farewell to all the shared memories as you watching the open market put a price on everything you hold so dear. Always remember how lucky we are to have a roof over our head and a place to indulge us through all of life’s ups and downs.

“Our homes are as nuanced as we are. They tell our story.

We grow together.”
